As a rule, we refrain from recommending pick-up times to passengers and leave it entirely at their discretion.
With that said, we generally recommend you base it on the time the airlines and airports recommend you arrive at the airport before your flight and the time it'll take to get to the airport by car.
Getting Through the Airport
For the latest recommendation on how soon before your flight you should arrive at the airport please consult your airline and/or follow the recommendation from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey -- the agency that runs the major local airports. The minimum amount of time they encourage that you check-in before your flight is:
- Domestic/Canada: 2 hours
- Domestic: 2 hours
- International: 3 hours
- Domestic: 2 hours
- International: 3 hours
Getting To the Airport
Once you know the time you'd like to arrive at the airport, you should take into account the time it will take you to get there from your pick-up address. We recommend you use a tool such as Google Maps to give you a reasonable travel time estimate for the specify day of the week and time you are traveling and and add an additional 10-15 minute buffer to the upper limit of that range.Traveling during a holiday or known busy travel and flight day? Consider adding an extra 30 minutes.
Putting It All Together
Now that you have those two pieces of information, and after accounting for you own personal preference, you can work backwards to decide on the time to put on your reservation.
As you can see, we like to err on the side of caution and think it better to wait a few hours in an airport instead of being worried about missing your flight while in the middle of a highway. However, since only you know what you are most comfortable with, we want you to fully be in control of the time on your reservation.
